Three Sparrows: Mosman’s only independent bookstore thrives in the face of stiff competition.

Julia Cahill, owner of Three Sparrows in Mosman, says she hopes there is room for two book stores in the village.

When Mosman village was suddenly left without a bookshop two years ago, Julia Cahill decided to take matters into her own hands.

The passionate local and avid reader leased a little store at 836 Military Rd, filling its tiny 49sqm space with a curated collection of diverse titles in October 2022.

The tiny store is packed to the rafters with hand-picked titles, curated for the local community.

Fast forward to today, and Three Sparrows Books is one of Mosman’s most loved stores on the Military Rd shopping strip, with a legion of loyal customers.

“The dream was to have a store that would truly reflect our community,” Julia told Mosman Collective, “and I’m very proud of what Three Sparrows has achieved in a relatively short time.”

Julia said she has been “overwhelmed” by support from Mosman and North Sydney LGAs.

A proudly independent bookstore, Three Sparrows has the interests of lower north shore locals at the heart of its ethos.

“I adore this suburb and deeply understand the people who live here,” Julia said.

“I think the magic of Three Sparrows is our truly bespoke offering, where we know customers by name and can always suggest the perfect book to suit them.”

Filled to its rafters with a wide range of new releases and old favourites, the little shop also boasts a vast back catalogue, quirky gifts and hand-made cards by local artists.

“We provide old-fashioned, friendly service and find the right books to suit this demographic,” Julia said.

“Three Sparrows will never be a ‘pile ‘em high and sell ‘em cheap” chain store.

“I am not into selling for selling’s sake.”

Three Sparrows has fast become one of Mosman’s most popular independently owned stores.

When asked her thoughts on the impending arrival of Harry Hartog next month, Julia said she “hoped there was room” for two bookstores within 100 metres of each other.

“Three Sparrows customers will continue to support us – and the feedback we’ve had over the past week has been incredible,” she said.

“With some luck, more people will choose to pop in and visit our little bookstore, where there is something for everyone.

“Our books are carefully curated and always hand-picked by me.

“Three Sparrows is also very proud of our kids’ book range, lovingly selected to suit our local children and their interests.”
