North Sydney businessman Tim Wedlock was struck and killed by a car in the US city of Nashville on Saturday.

Tim Wedlock, the Executive Chairman of North Sydney’s AEI Insurance Broking Group, has been killed after an 87-year-old driver ran a red light and struck pedestrians in downtown Nashville.
Mr Wedlock, 58, was crossing the road in the Tennessee city’s Broadway district on Saturday, 1 August, when the car ploughed into a group on the crosswalk.
Mr Wedlock was Executive Chairman of AEI Insurance Broking Group in North Sydney, where he had worked for 39 years.
Nashville police say Thomas Cahill, 87, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, ran the light while driving south on 4th Avenue. Three other pedestrians were hurt, a 44-year-old man and two women aged 21 and 58.
Cahill and his 90-year-old wife were taken to hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Police are still investigating.
One officer summed up the loss in a single line. “This man came to Nashville for a visit and he didn’t leave,” he said.
A legend of the industry
Mr Wedlock led one of the lower north shore’s best-known insurance firms from its head office at Elizabeth Plaza, North Sydney. He had marked 39 years with AEI the week before his death.
“Over that time he built AEI into one of Australia’s most respected broking groups,” the company said on LinkedIn.

A former President and Fellow of the National Insurance Brokers Association, he gave more than two decades to its committees and national board, and was a long-standing backer of the Careers in Insurance initiative.
AEI managing director and chief executive Noel Kelly said Mr Wedlock was the heart of the business.
“Tim was the cornerstone of AEI and a legend of this industry. Thirty-nine years in, he still had more energy than anyone in the room,” Mr Kelly said.
“We have lost a leader and a mentor but most of all we have lost a mate.”

A friend to freight
The trucking industry, which AEI has long insured, also mourned a friend. Road Freight NSW chief executive Simon O’Hara said Mr Wedlock backed operators through the hard times and the good.
“Tim stood up for people,” Mr O’Hara said. “He was a trusted adviser, a respected industry leader and, above all, a thoroughly decent man.”
Mr Wedlock is survived by his wife Prue and their children, Matt and Ash.
