Mosman Public School wants a lollipop person, and the NSW state government will pay $27.22 per hour if you can see local kids safely across the road each morning and afternoon.

In a job ad published this week, Transport for NSW says the role requires a “Road Safety Hero that is held in very high esteem in our communities and vital to the safety of our kids, parents, teachers, and local motorists”.

Whoever takes up the position will become a “much-loved familiar face around the school”, with a unique opportunity to touch the lives of countless families, the advertisement says.

Shifts will fall between the school zone hours 8:30 am to 9:30 am and 2:45 pm to 3:45 pm, with one hour each weekday morning and afternoon during the school term.

The permanent part-time job comes with superannuation, and the successful applicant will be paid during school holidays from Terms 1 to 3.

No experience is needed, with all training, uniforms and equipment provided, but you must be 18 years or over at the time of appointment, and willing to get a Working with Children check.

Transport for NSW says lollipop people must also be able to undertake their role, rain, hail or shine.

“You’re reliable and prepared to show up for your community – in good or bad weather,” the ad reads.

Not every school gets a lollipop lady or man, because under Transport for NSW’s rules a crossing must sit inside a 40km/h school zone and be used by infant or primary school children, with either 50 or more unaccompanied children or 300 or more passenger car units counted in the morning or afternoon.

The school’s children’s crossing on Myahgah Rd, near Belmont Rd, was upgraded to a raised wombat crossing in 2024, part-funded by Transport for NSW’s Get NSW Active program.

Applications for the role are open until 11:59pm on Monday 2 November.
