Census 2021: Here’s what we’ve learned about life on the lower north shore.

Insights from the pandemic Census night are in, with data revealing we are a fast-changing, growing and culturally diverse nation.

The 2021 Census counted nearly 25.5 million people (25,422,788) in Australia, excluding overseas visitors, on Census night. This is an increase of over two million people (2,020,896), or 8.6 per cent, since the 2016 Census.

We’ve crunched the numbers and can now reveal the key statistics about life on the lower north shore. You’ll find them below!

MOSMAN LGA

The total population in Mosman is 28,329. There are 13,033 men and 15,294 women. Most people fall into the 50-54 age group category (2,125 residents), closely followed by 45-49 years (2,109) and 10-14 years in third place (1,871 people).

In Mosman LGA, 11,909 residents are married, 493 are separated and 2,193 divorced. There are 1,228 widowers and 7,898 people who’ve never been wed.

The total population in Mosman is 28,329 according to the latest Census figures.

When it comes to Country of Birth, the top five responses on the 2021 Census form were Australia (17,428), England (2,416), New Zealand (719), China (719), South Africa (509) and the United States (496).

Interestingly, 11,352 people listed themselves as having “No Religion”, with 6,522 Catholics, 4,903 Anglicans and 620 Eastern Orthodox.

Median weekly incomes in Mosman were $1,487 (personal) and $4,502 (family).

In Mosman LGA, 11,909 residents are married, 493 are separated and 2,193 divorced.

There are 11,544 occupied dwellings, with an average 2.8 bedrooms per home. Family households are the biggest group (7,620), with 3,658 people living on their own.

The median rent is $590 per week and the median monthly mortgage repayment is $4,767.

NORTH SYDNEY LGA

The total population in North Sydney is 68,950. Of this number, 32,443 are men and 36,505 are women.

The greatest number of people fall into the 30-34 age category, with a total of 8,002 residents, followed by 35-39 years (6,876) and 25-29-year-olds in third place (6,650 people).

North Sydney LGA has 68,950 residents.

In North Sydney LGA there are 24,340 married people, 1,479 separated, 6,074 divorced and 26,249 who have never been wed.

Australia is listed as the top Country of Birth (38,646 residents), with England (4,356) in second place and China in third spot (2,521).

The top language used at home (other than English) is Mandarin (2,968 households) closely followed by Cantonese (1,888 households).

In North Sydney, the greatest number of people fall into the 30-34 age category.

Median weekly incomes are $1,593 (personal) and $3,743 (family).

There are 32,395 occupied dwellings with an average 2.2 bedrooms per home. Family households make up the biggest group of residents (18,279) with 12,490 people living on their own.

The median rent is $550 per week and the median monthly mortgage repayment is $4,400.
