Forget draining your Opal card these Easter holidays, thanks to the NSW Government who say we can hop on public transport FREE from April 14-26.

The freebies come after weeks of commuter disruption.

The fare-free deal, announced by NSW Transport Minister David Elliott, was sealed following recent heated negotiations between the government and the rail union over workplace conditions and pay.

Free public transport for Sydney locals this Easter. What do you think?

“To commuters affected by recent rail disruptions, I want to say a heartfelt thank you for your patience,” Mr Elliott said on Sunday.

“I hope the fare-free 12 days of Easter is a way for you to enjoy quality time with family and friends during the school holidays, while at the same time helping to revitalise our city centres and local communities.”

The free-fare deal covers all Opal services between in Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, the Hunter and Illawarra regions, and includes train, bus, light rail and ferry services.

It gives locals the opportunity to use free travel to the Royal Easter Show, NRL events and will also be valid on Anzac Day.

Fares will be free from 4am Thursday April 14 to 3.59am April 26.

The standstill caused widespread confusion among commuters and was estimated to have cost at least $33 million.
