CCTV has captured the brazen moment a dairy thief steals two crates of milk from a Mosman café.

Staff at August the Old Place were left 40 litres short ahead of the morning rush on Monday, with Chef Moon telling Mosman Collective the bizarre robbery impacted his daily takings.

The popular cafe, located at 707 Military Rd, was the target of thieves just after 3:30am on Monday.

“I am very disappointed and yes, it is upsetting to think this is happening in our community,” he said.

“Stealing our milk is a huge inconvenience – and it is becoming a regular occurrence.”

Chef Moon said “one or two” bottles are often stolen each week, but this is the first time two full crates of dairy have been taken from the front steps of August the Old Place.

CCTV shows a hooded figure taking two crates of milk from August the Old Place and returning to a parked car.

CCTV shows a hooded figure, believed to be a woman, exit a car and approach the café at 3:25am, carrying away two crates of full cream milk that had been earlier delivered by a supplier.

Less than a minute later, the female returns, perhaps in search of fresh produce, Chef Moon believes.

“In the past few months, we have had our bread delivery stolen, and sometimes our fresh muffins go missing in the hours before the café opens,” he said.

“In the past people have also taken our pot plants, but this is the first time 18 bottles of milk have disappeared.”

Chef Moon is hoping local café owners will regularly monitor their CCTV and be alert to an increased risk of theft.

“I would like to know if other lower north shore café owners are experiencing early morning theft,” he said.

“Surely, I can’t be the only business suffering these regular losses.

Chef Moon said he is “disappointed and upset” at the rise in petty theft, with bread, muffins and milk deliveries being stolen.

“It’s not so much the financial loss that makes me angry, it is the inconvenience to me and my loyal customers.

“This theft is something that shouldn’t happen on the quiet streets of Mosman.”
