When Royalty comes to town, Admiralty House is where they usually stay.

And next week, the closely guarded gates of the Governor-General’s residence will be open to the general public, for a special picnic in the stunning grounds.

Tuesday, 27 February is the day you need to set aside, with the open event running from 4pm – 6pm.

Queen Elizabeth stayed at Admiralty House a total of 16 times during her life.

Admiralty House is one of Sydney’s oldest and most historic properties, which was originally a sheep station before it became a residence in 1843.

Twenty-two of 27 Governors-General have called Admiralty House home, and the current Governor-General David Hurley has made an effort to make it more inclusive.

Even though the royals have long used it as their Australian base – Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Phillip stayed there 16 times – scores of world leaders have also held formal meetings in its charming rooms.

Prince George famously received an oversized wombat when he stayed at Admiralty House with William and Kate in 2014.

The drawing room was where Prince George was famously given an oversized wombat when he visited with William and Kate in 2014.

It’s also where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle launched the Invictus Games in 2018.

King Charles, Princess Diana, Princess Anne and Prince Edward are others familiar with the grounds, who enjoyed exploring the gardens, and experiencing the sheer beauty of Sydney Harbour up close.

For families attending the picnic, there will be room to spread a rug, and ample space for children (and adults!) to run around and enjoy the atmosphere and views. Please note no catering is available on site – you will need to bring your own food and drinks.
