Mosman Youth Art Prize

Budding artists have until Friday, 28 April, to register and submit their drawings, paintings, photographs, videos, prints, sculptures or ceramics to try their hand at winning the prestigious Mosman Youth Art Prize.

Since its inception in 1988 by local artist Ken Done AM, the prestigious competition has spawned numerous high-profile careers, including that of this year’s judge and previous Mosman Youth Prize and Mosman Art Prize (2018) winner Natasha Walsh.

Eligible 12 to 21-year-old artists must register online and have their submission taken to Mosman Art Gallery on receipting day on Friday, 28 April, between 8.30am and 6pm. Visit mosmanartgallery.org.au to enter and for full terms and conditions. Children’s Activities

Council offers a range of free activities for pre-schoolers and older children during the school term.

To celebrate Mother’s Day, Mosman Library Service will hold a free half-hour Outdoor Storytime for children up to five and their families on Thursday, 11 May, at 10:30am under the trees at Allan Border Oval, The Crescent, weather permitting.

Regular activities are also held at Mosman’s Barry O’Keefe Library to assist parents and carers to develop their child’s early literacy skills, including weekly morning and lunchtime Babytime sessions and colouring or craft Storytime sessions.

Five to 12-year-olds can attend art and craft sessions with Thursday Kids every Thursday from 4 pm to 4.45pm during school terms.

Comfortable Homes

Join Council’s next informative session in its energy miniseries, Comfortable Homes in Summer and Winter, which focuses on maintaining a comfortable home all year round while saving on energy costs.

The one-hour workshop is supported by Mosman, Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai councils and Adam Corrigan from Your Energy Friend.

Heritage Festival

Mosman Library Service’s Australian Heritage Festival events are headlined with a fascinating talk on ‘The Barn’ at Mosman Bay.

In 1830 Archibald Mosman applied for and received one of the newly created sheltered allotments at Great Sirius Cove, today Mosman Bay, using convict labour to establish a whaling station and ship-repair premises, including a stone wharf, stone storehouses and ships’ crew accommodation as well as a large stone residence above the whaling station overlooking the bay.

Join Colleen Godsell as she traces The Barn’s days from being part of the complex, a tallow candle factory and wool washing operation, a skating rink, a meeting place and a dance hall to now being home to 1st Mosman Scouts.

Colleen has arranged an open day at The Barn the following weekend to complement her talk, which will be held on Monday 1 May at 7pm. For more details about both events, visit events.mosman.nsw.gov.au

A free exhibition is also being held on Mosman’s namesake Archibald Mosman as part of the festival events in Barry O’Keefe Library during its opening hours until 14 May.

Preventing Falls

The ABC’s favourite physio will share a fun and fact-filled session about the latest research on balance, bones and preventing falls next month.

Adjunct Fellow at Macquarie University and Founder of Physiocise Anna-Louise Bouvier will demonstrate simple, practical exercises that can be done in the kitchen, lounge room or even while brushing teeth.

Call 9978 4128 to register for the workshop, which will be held at Mosman Square Seniors Centre on Monday, 8 May, from 12 pm to 1 pm.

Creation Space

A range of free interactive activities is available over the coming weeks at The Creation Space maker space at Barry O’Keefe Library, which provides a place for the community to create, learn and develop digital literacy skills.

A monthly series of workshops for adults is held on the last Friday of the month at 11 am for those who would like to use the equipment to create something extraordinary, with coming sessions including Personalised Laser Cut Coasters in May and 3D Printed Jewellery in June.

Children aged nine to 12 can attend hands-on Creative Kids sessions on the first Wednesday of the month at 4 pm, while 12 to 18-year-olds can enjoy Science the Heck Out of This! Workshops on the first Tuesday of every month at 4 pm.
