Better beach access on the way as Mosman Council moves to reclaim Spit East Reserve.

Mosman Council has unveiled plans to overhaul “underutilised” Spit East Reserve.

Mosman Council has unveiled plans to overhaul “underutilised” Spit East Reserve – returning it to the public after years of difficult due to a lack of boat storage.

A concept design plan, prepared by a commissioned landscape architect, is now open for community review.

Currently the reserve has no formal area for boat storage. Various watercraft hinder public access down to the beach.

Submissions close Thursday, 23 April at 5pm.

Three longstanding problems will be tackled at once: beach access choked by watercraft, a deteriorating sandstone sea wall, and a complete absence of stormwater infrastructure quietly eroding the reserve’s sand bank every time it rains.

Under the proposal, boats would be relocated to a dedicated storage area on the southern side of the beach -clearing the foreshore and opening a new pedestrian route through to the sea wall on the northern side.

The concept scheme provides an area for boat storage to the Southern side of the beach.

A new path would run along the wall, guiding visitors toward views out to Clontarf.

But the wall itself is in poor shape.

Council confirms the existing sandstone sea wall is deteriorating, with sections that have become highly weathered. The plan calls for repairs and repointing across the structure, with the easternmost section to be cordoned off to reduce the safety risk to pedestrians.

No stormwater, no protection

Spit East Reserve currently has no stormwater infrastructure whatsoever.

During heavy rain events, water travels down both Parriwi Road and Spit Road directly into the reserve – eroding the sand bank on the northern side of the sea wall.

If approved, the sea wall to be repaired and repointed, and a pedestrian path installed to guide people towards the view out to Clontarf.

Council’s proposed fix is a new stormwater pit and pipe, supported by a rocked and planted swale to manage any overland flow, with the aim of preserving and rejuvenating the sandbank before further erosion takes hold.
