Acclaimed artist Fiona Lowry has been named this years judge of the 2023 Mosman Art Prize.

Mosman Art Gallery has appointed eminent artist, Fiona Lowry, as the expert entrusted with judging this year’s Mosman Art Prize.

Ms Lowry won the Archibald Prize in 2014 with her portrait of Penelope Seidler. Her artworks hang in galleries across the country, including the national Museum of Contemporary Art, the National Gallery of Australia, the National Portrait Gallery, Artbank and more.

Mosman Art Gallery director John Cheeseman said the gallery was “thrilled” to have Fiona as the 2023 Judge.

“Fiona is an exceptional artist whose practice encompasses both traditional and contemporary aspects of the process of art-making. I am certain her keen eye will allow for a selection of works that will recognise excellence in established forms and push new boundaries in painting practice in Australia.”

The Mosman Art Prize is the oldest and most prestigious municipal art prize in Australia.

Entries remain open for the 2023 Mosman Art Prize, with the deadline 4 August. The annual exhibition will take place 23 to 29 October.

The Mosman Art Prize is the oldest and most prestigious municipal art prize in Australia. Winning entries form the basis of the Mosman Art Collection, a valuable and historic collection that surveys Australian painting since the prize’s inception in 1947. The inaugural winner was Margaret Olley.

Entries to Mosman Art Prize will remain online after the digital entry process last year enabled artists from beyond the Sydney region to enter with ease.

Previous winners of the Mosman Art Prize include Michael Zavros.

Entries are now open for the 2023 Mosman Art Prize. The exhibition will take place 23 September – 29 October. The prize is open to all Australian residents aged over 16.

The Mosman Art Prize – worth $50,000 – is the longest running and most prestigious municipal art prize in Australia. Winning entries form the basis of the Mosman Art Collection, a valuable and historic collection that surveys Australian painting since 1947.

Mosman Art Gallery is located on the corner of Art Gallery Way and Myahgah Rd in Mosman.

Previous winners form a roll call of Australian art luminaries; Grace Cossington Smith, Nancy Borlase, Lloyd Rees, Guy Warren, Margo Lewers, Jenny Sages, Noel McKenna, Cressida Campbell, Jumaadi, Elisabeth Cummings, Adam Cullen, Jasper Knight, Guan Wei, Natasha Walsh and Michael Zavros. Margaret Olley was the inaugural winner in 1947.

Entries to Mosman Art Prize is online, enabling people from beyond the Sydney region to enter with ease. More than 800 artists entered last year.
