Big changes ahead for South Mosman Wharf. Here’s what it means for you.

Published On: June 6, 2024

Commuters using South Mosman Wharf will have to find alternative transport until February 2025.

A new ferry wharf featuring a floating pontoon, covered waiting areas, a lift and customer seating is underway in Mosman.

Work on the Musgrave St facility began on June 3, with the project expected to take eight months.

The existing wharf is well overdue for an upgrade.

Ferry passengers and commuters must use alternative transport until February 2025 or use Mosman Bay Wharf.

“Those impacted can catch the 111 bus service from Musgrave St to Canrobert Sr and change to the 230 bus from Avenue Rd, or the 230 bus from Military Rd can also connect to North Sydney and other services,” A Transport NSW spokesperson said.

The upgrade follows a community consultation in 2020, which identified significant access issues and a lack of protection from the weather.

The new wharf is part of the $800 million Transport Access Program, providing safe, modern, accessible infrastructure for NSW residents.

Musgrave Street’s new pontoon will feature a waiting area with a curved roof, seating and glass weather protection panels to provide passengers with a sheltered place to wait for the ferry.

Other changes include a new lift to provide easy access for all ferry users, especially those with a disability, older residents and people with prams or luggage.

A covered gangway, CCTV, lighting and bicycle parking are also planned.

The Transport NSW spokesperson said community feedback allowed other essential changes to be made.

“As a result of your feedback, we have added a covering to the gangway, stairs, lift platforms and glass screens at the northern and southern ends of the covered pontoon to provide weather protection for the seating area.”

Standard work hours will be between 7 am and 6 pm Monday to Friday and between 8 am and 1 pm on Saturdays.

“Some of the work during these times will be noisy, but no work is planned for Sundays or public holidays,” the spokesperson said.

“Some out-of-hours work may be carried out for work that requires calm water conditions. We would notify impacted residents before carrying out any out-of-hours work.”

Other wharf upgrades are being delivered to Manly Cove, Darling Point, Greenwich Point, and Watsons Bay.
