Speaking on 2GB’s Ben Fordham program, Detective Superintendent Paul Devaney from North Shore Police Area Command said he personally reviewed the footage and the picture was unambiguous.

“They’ve [the child] run across the road against the traffic lights. Police had a green light, and as I said, I watched the dash cam footage. We had a number of witnesses come forward, and it’s quite clear that the young boy runs into the side of the police car, then is propelled across to the other side of the road,” Detective Superintendent Devaney told Fordham.

Detective Superintendent Devaney said both officers in the vehicle were affected by the incident.

“The police car was driven by a 36-year-old senior constable who was accompanied by a probationary constable. They were both quite shaken up by the incident,” he said.

The child was hit about 7.20pm on Monday, June 1 at around 7:20pm.

Police officers treated the child at the scene before paramedics arrived. He was transported to Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick, where he remains in a stable condition.

The driver was breathalysed at the scene and returned a negative result.

Police confirmed on Tuesday that investigations into the circumstances of the crash are continuing.
