A big slice of Mosman will shut to traffic this Sunday, as thousands of runners take to the streets for the Mini-Mos fun run.

Roads around Mosman Public School close from 6am, with the 10km off at 7am and nothing reopening until 10.30am.

Every road that closes, and when

The tightest squeeze is the streets right around the school.

From 6am to 10.30am, Gouldsbury St, Myahgah Rd, The Crescent and Belmont Rd (between Cowles Rd and Gladstone Rd) will have very restricted access.

Prince Albert St is restricted from 6am until about 8.45am, and nearby streets will feel it too.

Harbour St, Vista St and Art Gallery Way face disruptions from 8.15am to 10.15am, while the 5km and 2km races are on.

Drivers on Middle Head Rd and Bradleys Head Rd will cop short delays twice as runners cross: roughly 7.05am to 7.35am, then again 8.15am to 8.35am.

The races, and the fair

The 10km goes off at 7am on Belmont Rd, the 5km follows at 8.15am from Myahgah Rd, and the kids’ 2km starts at 9.30am from the turf field near Belmont Rd.

They all finish on Gouldsbury St, right by the school.

And it’s not just a run. Once the racing is done, the Mini-Mos turns into a community fair, with food, stalls and family fun at the school.

More than 40 years on

The Mini-Mos started back in 1982, when Agnes Levine, Tony Tanner, Warren Nutt and Mim Nutt set out to raise money for Mosman Public School. That first race brought in $25,000.

“The City2Surf had been around for a while but there was this growing popularity with fun runs so we thought we’d give it a try and it sort of took off from there,” Levine told Mosman Collective.

More than four decades on, it’s still run entirely by volunteers, and every dollar still goes to the school.

Where the money goes

This year’s funds help pay for air-conditioning, shade sails and playground updates at the school.

Major sponsor David Murphy made his pitch with a nod to John F. Kennedy.

“Ask not what your local primary school can do for you – ask what you can do for MPS,” he said.

C3 Education Group in Cremorne, Limes Dry Cleaners in Mosman and Shadforth Cottage childcare are backing the day too.

Before you go

Entry is online only at mini-mos.com.au, and rego closes 20 minutes before each race. An adult running with a child costs $20 early bird or $30 standard.

Race packs can be picked up Saturday from 10am to 2pm, or from 6am Sunday, though Sunday queues can be long. There’s a bag drop in the school library from 6.15am, and water stations on every course.
