The most popular baby names in Mosman and North Sydney LGAs for 2023 have been revealed.

In Mosman LGA, William was the top-ranked boys’ name for 2023, followed by Jack (#2) and James (#3). The top two girls in Mosman over the past year are Lily (#1) and Isla (#2).

In Mosman, Lily is the most popular girls name for 2023, with William the most popular boys name.

North Sydney LGA parents decided on Amelia as the most popular choice for a girl’s name in 2023, followed by Eleanor. The top three boys’ names were Leo, Henry and Oliver.

The name choices don’t necessarily reflect the top names across the state.

For the first time, Isla has top billing for girls in NSW, while Oliver was the most common name for baby boys.

Isla is the most popular girls name in NSW for 2023.

Isla moved up from the third spot in 2022 to take the number one position over the past twelve months, with Amelia only four registered births behind as parents’ second most common choice for girls.

Rounding out the top 10 were Olivia, Mia, Charlotte, Ava, Lily, Sophia, Evelyn and Matilda.

Amara, Maisie, Margot, Lucia, Lottie, Cleo, Kaia, Callie, Kiara and Zahra were all girls’ names that made it into the NSW top 100 for the first time.

For boys, Oliver regained its position as number one after losing the top spot to Noah in 2022.

But Noah remained the second most common NSW boys’ name in 2023, followed by Leo, Henry, Theodore, Luca, Hudson, William, Lucas and Charlie.

Eight new names made it into the top 100 for boys — Miles, Isaiah, Darcy, Tommy, Spencer, Parker, Mateo and Marcus.

Oliver is the most popular boys name in NSW.

However, locally, the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages data has revealed that lower north shore parents stick with tradition when naming their children.

Over the past 20 years, classics like Thomas, Charlotte, Matilda, Henry, Sophie and Alexandra have all made the list of top choices in Mosman and North Sydney LGAs.

In 2003, William was Mosman’s most popular boys name, followed by Thomas and Jack. Charlotte was the number one choice for girls, with Mia and Sophie in second and third positions. In the same year, North Sydney ranked William first, followed by Thomas and James, with girls’ names Charlotte, Alexandra and Jessica in the top 3 spots.

In 2020, Grace, Sienna, Olivia, Leo, Henry and Jack were some of the more popular lower north shore baby names.
