Six historic Cremorne cottages saved from demolition after four-year battle.

Six historic homes in Cremorne have been saved from the wrecking ball after a four-year battle between a Sydney property developer and a local conservation group.
North Sydney Council revealed that 78, 80, 82, 84, 86 and 88 Parraween St have been given official heritage status.
Part of a massive 7,530 sqm land holding, the properties were among 23 earmarked by Pathways Residences, who planned multi-storey seniors complex for the site.
The multi-million-dollar development ignited a lengthy battle after 750 residents petitioned to protect the houses.
In November 2022, the developer returned fire, lodging a Complying Development Certificate (CDC) with authorities, allowing them to commence demolition works within two weeks. This led to an extraordinary meeting called by North Sydney Council, which then placed an Interim Heritage Order on the homes.
“This is an unusual call for a meeting, but it is well justified because of the need for us to protect the scale, the character, and the heritage significance of Parraween St,” North Sydney Mayor Zoe Baker said at the time.
Founder of the Cremorne Conservation Group (CCG), Fiona Gracie, told Mosman Collective she was “thrilled to win against all odds”.
“Four years of hard work and persistence by our community and our Council has been worth it,” she said.
“I want to extend a massive congratulations to everyone, including the precincts, who spent long hours writing submissions, attending Land & Environment Court site meetings, attending Court proceedings, and turning up to argue and support the case for the Parraween St heritage listings at North Sydney Council meetings.
“This is an amazing result that demonstrates the power of the voice of the people,” Ms Gracie said.

Ms Gracie said North Sydney Mayor Zoe Baker and Councillor James Spenceley had gone “above and beyond” for North Sydney LGA residents worried about over-development in the area.
“I wish to extend a huge thank you to those Councillors, in particular Mayor Zoë Baker and Cr. James Spenceley who listened and acted on behalf of our community to support the Heritage Listing.
“We would not have achieved this milestone without the combined effort of all involved.”
