Taronga Zoo launches bold plan to reach net-zero by 2030.

Taronga Zoo has launched an ambitious net-zero target by 2030.

The bold new plan will see the zoo powered by 100% renewable electricity, with Taronga CEO Cameron Kerr announcing a commitment to cutting carbon emissions by 70%, through the use of electric vehicles and reducing emissions in supply chains.

“Climate change impacts many of Australia’s native species, so it’s important to know that visiting Taronga is not only a good day out for the family – but a good day out for the planet too,” Mr Kerr said.

Member for North Shore, Felicity Wilson MP, today helped Taronga staff welcome guests back to the zoo for the first time since lockdown.

“I know we’ve missed Taronga, and Taronga has missed us,” she said, “the team here have done a terrific job keeping the animals entertained in the absence of crowds, but the crowds are going to pour back in.”

“Not only do we have a beautiful Sydney summer on the way, but the NSW Government has given additional Dine and Discover vouchers to encourage people to get out and about to visit places like Taronga.”

Member for North Shore, Felicity Wilson MP, has welcomed visitors back to Taronga Zoo after lockdown.

As well as conservation, Taronga is recognised internationally for its leadership and expertise in sustainability and commitment to tackling climate change. Taronga Zoo has launched its 2021-2025 Sustainability Strategy, which commits to reaching net-zero by 2030 and being powered by 100% renewable energy.

Ms Wilson said Taronga Zoo can continue its renowned conservation work thanks to investment by the NSW Government.

“What an exciting day to talk about the net-zero commitment of Taronga,” she said.

“Taronga has always been a leader in conservation, protecting our wildlife, and playing a role in our broader society in ensuring that what we all do as a community is put the environment first.”
