From flared elbows to offbeat Nutbush routines, Aussie dance floors have seen it all. But if you’re looking for a more structured jig, Mosman’s Tracy Mackenzie offers just that with her Scottish Country Dancing classes.

“Scottish country dancing is done in sets, usually in two, three, or four couple sets,” Tracy explains. “You’re turning, making formations, dancing in circles… and sometimes, the fun is in getting it a little bit wrong. It’s always a giggle!”

Local residents are invited to try something new and “have a real giggle”, Tracy told Mosman Collective.

Originally from Fife, Scotland, Tracy has been dancing since she was a young girl. Now a high school teacher in Mosman, she’s trading the classroom for the dance floor, using her lifelong passion to connect with the community and share the joy of dance.

Her weekly sessions have become a hit, drawing participants like Margot from as far as Avalon. “Tracy’s a great teacher, and it’s enormous fun,” Margot says. “It’s also good for short-term memory—learning formations and putting them together keeps the brain sharp!”

Welcoming all ages and skill levels, classes start with light warm-ups before moving into routines set to lively Scottish music. “We assume no knowledge,” Tracy says. “Once you walk through that door, we start from the basics. Most people leave with a smile—and it’s my stress-buster after a week of teaching!”

The classes are designed to provide an enjoyable experience for all age groups and skill levels.

Even seasoned dancers like Diana, who teaches at a summer school in Scotland, find Tracy’s classes refreshing. “The exhilaration of moving in time with the music is just uplifting,” she shares.

While it may seem niche in Australia, Sydney has a thriving Scottish dancing community. The Sydney Branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) partners with groups like Tracy’s to promote the art form across the city.

Classes are just $15, or $10 if you are a RSCDS member.

Head along to the Guides Hall on Parriwi Rd from 6-8pm every Tuesday.

“I invite you to have a go,” Tracy encourages. “You might hate it – my husband does – but at least try it! Most people are surprised by how much they enjoy it.”

Ready to Step Out of Your Comfort Zone?

Join Tracy’s Scottish Country Dancing classes every Tuesday from 6-8 pm at Mosman Guide Hall, Parriwi Park, Upper Spit Road. Classes are $15 or $10 for RSCDS members. Bring your comfy shoes, a water bottle, and a great attitude!
