Luna Park’s most popular ride, the famous Wild Mouse, will reopen to visitors after a multi-million-dollar restoration.

The rackety roller coaster with its iconic birds-eye view across Sydney Harbour will take thrill-seekers on a heart stopping track of gravity driven dips, twists and sharp turns from Friday 14 March.

The 400-metre circuit first opened in 1963, after the park’s general manager, Ted Hopkins, had found the ride at Seattle’s World Fair years earlier. He purchased plans for the ride, which were created by German manufacturer Mack, and worked with his staff to assemble it.

Originally conceived as a temporary ride, the Wild Mouse was dismantled and taken to the Brisbane Ekka, Melbourne and Sydney’s Easter Show. It was replaced by the Wild Cat in 1969 but returned in 1995 and was immediately placed on the heritage register.

Luna Park Sydney chief executive John Hughes said the ride’s restoration was central to preserving the theme park’s heritage.

“Restoring a 60-year-old rollercoaster in a modern setting required us to work with specialist engineers, fitters, welders and heritage experts to ensure every component was true to the original design, along with ensuring the ride met all current standards for engineering, electrical and safety,” he said.

“We want Luna Park Sydney to be the best experience destination in Australia, anchored in the best of the old and the best of the new.”
