Local households are set for more financial pain, with garbage collection hikes set for the lower north shore from July 1.

Mosman Council – which charges the most expensive domestic waste fees in Sydney – will lift 120 litre bin charges by 8 per cent, from $750 to $810 a year.

In NSW, local councils have the power to set domestic waste fees, which are charged on top of general rates.

Annual inflation was 2.4 per cent in the March quarter.

The annual cost of one 80 litre bin, currently $457, will rise to $494 in the 2025/26 financial year.

From July, residents with a 120-litre bin will be charged $810, while those with a 240-litre bin will pay $1690 per year, up from $1564 in 2024.

In NSW, local councils have the power to set domestic waste fees, which are charged on top of general rates bills and are meant to recover costs related to kerbside bin collection services.

North Sydney rate payers will be charged $485 per year for an 80-litre bin, up from $471. Those with a 120-litre bin will pay $808 annually (up from $785) with 240-litre bin owners outlaying $1,419 per year (up from $1,379).

In Willoughby LGA, the standard 120 litre bin charge goes up $24 a year, from $640 to $664.

North Sydney rate payers will be charged $485 per year for an 80-litre bin, up from $471.

Phyllis Miller, president of Local Government NSW, said the fees were partly a result of increases to the NSW government waste levy that is charged to councils for the disposal of waste at landfill.

“The levy charged to councils is horrendous, and the only way for councils to recoup that cost is through domestic waste management charges we charge households,” Miller said.
The proposed increases come weeks after the release of a NSW government waste strategy, partly aimed at addressing a growing shortage of landfill capacity to service Greater Sydney.

NSW Environment Minister Penny Sharpe said that unless the issue was addressed, garbage collection costs would rise, resulting in residents facing “intolerable increases” by the amount paid for local rubbish services.
