North Sydney Council placed at least 20 seizure notices on community seating used by residents and ferry passengers on Hayes St in Neutral Bay.

The notices were stuck to tables and chairs at 5pm on Wednesday, warning that the Council would take possession of the outdoor furniture on March 13.

The notices state that tables and chairs will be removed at 5pm on March 13.

Furious locals have taken to social media, accusing the Council of “harassment” and calling Rangers “heavy-handed”.

One resident called the decision “an absolute joke,” questioning why Council would “destroy a meeting place for locals and visitors.”

Another said the seating “gives Hayes St personality” and “encourages people to sit, chat and enjoy their coffee.”

Residents told Mosman Collective the space “gives Hayes St personality” and “encourages people to sit, chat and enjoy their coffee.”

“Seriously, what council would waste time and energy depriving residents of community pleasure?” another said. Much of the seating, donated by residents, has served locals for years.

Many gather at day’s end to play cards, watch the sunset, and connect. Mosman Collective spoke to several residents using the furniture yesterday, who said they would continue using the space despite the notices.

“Many people here work from home. This area is important for mental health, connection, and fresh air,” one man said. “I cannot believe North Sydney Council would stoop to this level.”

Another woman, who lives close by, said she was “disgusted” by the actions of Council Rangers.

“This quiet area is used daily by the community. We aren’t causing trouble by sitting here to watch ferries in the sunshine,” she said.

“I am disgusted. Parents with prams visit, the elderly have a quiet place to sit, and some people work remotely from the tables.”

Residents have told Mosman Collective they are “disgusted” by the actions of Council Rangers.

North Sydney Councillor Jessica Keen told Mosman Collective she was “Surprised and disappointed” by the sudden move.

“We will run a motion of urgency next Monday at the Council meeting to revoke this overreach. This is ridiculous.”

Mosman Collective has reached out to the North Sydney Council.
