Know a local hero? Nominations for the North Sydney Community Awards are now open.

By ANNA USHER

Do you have an incredible neighbour who takes your bin in on rubbish day? Know a local teen who gives up their free time to help other kids? Or how about a local group that deserves thanks for the positive impact they are making?

North Sydney Council is looking for the next round of local heroes to be recognised in the North Sydney Community Awards 2025.

Residents are asked to nominate a local person who has contributed to the community in a positive way.

Nominations are open now, and anyone who has made a significant and positive contribution to the North Sydney local government area is eligible.

Nominations can be made in five award categories in 2025:

  • Community Builder – this person or group makes the North Sydney community stronger, together.
  • Eco Warrior – a person or group who has helped to create a more sustainable city.
  • Living Legend – for individuals who have served the North Sydney community for more than 20 years.
  • Next Generation – an inspiring young person or group of young people.
  • Trailblazer – a person or group who has used innovation to drive positive change.

North Sydney LGA has 72,000 residents. Do you know a local hero?

Mayor Zoë Baker said: “Our community is so special, in part, due to the very high numbers of volunteers and residents who give their time, passion and expertise to others without any expectation of reward.

“Each year, individuals and groups who are nominated for our Community Awards inspire and delight us with their achievements and stories.

“If you know someone who deserves to be celebrated for their contribution, please put their name forward. It’s a practical and meaningful way to say thank you and acknowledge the important work that they do.”

North Sydney has a strong tradition of volunteering, community groups and community-minded individuals who help to create a vibrant and cohesive community. More than 10,000 people volunteer their time and skills to various causes, according to the 2021 Census. That’s nearly 1 in 6 residents, a number well above the proportion for greater Sydney.

Community Awards nominations are open now until 7 March 2025 and take just 10 minutes to submit online. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony to be held in mid-2025. Visit Council’s website to submit your nominations.
