Finally! Alfred Street access to North Sydney and Kirribilli returns on August 2.

Good news for residents with the reopening of the Alfred St off-ramp this Saturday August 2.

After months of frustration, local motorists will finally regain Warringah Freeway access to North Sydney and Kirribilli with the reopening of the south bound Alfred St off-ramp from 5am on Saturday August 2.

The closure has caused major disruption for commuters since November 2024, prompting backlash from residents and businesses. Transport for NSW has confirmed the ramp will reopen in an interim stage, six months ahead of schedule.

The Alfred St closure has caused 1000 extra drivers to use the Military Road off ramp every day, at a cost of $2 per trip.

Transport for NSW Deputy Secretary for Infrastructure Projects and Engineering, Raquel Rubalcaba thanked the local community for their patience while the off ramp was closed.

“We know how important this access is for the surrounding community, residents, and businesses, so we are opening the ramp in an interim stage which will allow access until the majority of works are completed around the end of the year.”

Entry to the temporary, shortened off ramp will be further south than the original off ramp. Motorists are advised to refer to directional signage and be prepared to exit the Freeway after the Ridge Street shared user bridge.

“By opening this section of the new off ramp, we are able to provide interim access for the local community, while also allowing our team to continue important work in this area and complete the final off ramp structure, dedicated southbound bus lane and the Mount Street underpass” Ms Rubalcaba said.

The Warringah Freeway Upgrade is expected to be completed in late 2026.

There will continue to be intermittent temporary closures of the Alfred Street off ramp to safely finalise work in the area, including between 10pm Saturday 2 to 6am Sunday 3 August (contingency shift). This closure so shortly after the opening is required to finalise any tie-in works in the area.

“We understand this closure has been disruptive for the community and we thank them for their patience as we continue to carry out this major work” Ms Rubalcaba said.

Access to the temporary, shortened off ramp will be further south than the original.

The long-term closure of the off ramp removed the need for 90 nights of noisy work and 10 weekends of extended hours work, by making it possible to complete these works safely during the day.

The Warringah Freeway Upgrade is expected to be completed in late 2026. You can find more details about the project here.
